Meet Dr. Mize
Dr. Travis W. Mize was born and raised in central Indiana although he had spent many summers as a youth in the Lake Cumberland area of Kentucky. It was only fitting that he would receive his formal education in both states as well. First, he earned his Bachelor of Science with Distinction from Indiana University. Dr. Mize then completed his dental training at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry in 2007 and received the prestigious Dental Student Award for Outstanding Achievement in Periodontics upon graduation. He then progressed into a 3-year residency in Periodontics at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. Upon finishing his Certificate in Periodontics and Master of Health Sciences in 2010, he was presented with the Inaugural Award for Academic Excellence in Periodontics by the College of Dental Medicine. Following graduation, Dr. Mize entered into private practice and provided patient care alongside his general dentistry colleagues for five years in Boston, Massachusetts emphasizing a inter-disciplinary approach and he continues to carry forth this philosophy of practice here in West Columbia. Dr. Mize is extensively trained in all areas of periodontics and implant surgery including advanced bone and sinus grafting techniques. He is also highly skilled in intravenous sedation and is happy to provide this service to his patients. Dr. Mize is recognized as a Board-Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology and is an active member of the local dental societies including the Central District Dental Society, Greater Columbia Dental Association and South Carolina Dental Association. He also serves as co-director of the Midlands Dental Collaborative, an affiliate of the world-wide recognized Seattle Study Club. The club’s mission is to maintain the continuity of education amongst dental professionals and improve clinical skills to benefit our patients and community.
Dr. Mize also maintains a faculty appointment as a post-doctoral clinical instructor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and travels to Boston every month to instruct residents in surgical as well as moderate sedation techniques. He also holds an active membership in the Harvard Odontological Society, one of the world’s most historic dental organizations. Locally, Dr. Mize is also a Clinical Assistant Professor at The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University and dedicates his time to training the periodontal residents in the graduate clinic. In 2015, he was presented with the Educator Award by the American Academy of Periodontology for his contributions in teaching and mentorship of post-doctoral periodontal students at Harvard University. Dr. Mize has published various clinical research articles in the peer-reviewed Journal of Periodontal Research with a focus on specific growth factors and their influence on periodontal disease and healing. He also lectures frequently on the academic level to post-doctoral students including presentations at Harvard School of Dental Medicine and the Goldman School of Dental Medicine at Boston University as well as guest lecturing for various continuing education courses.
Outside of patient care, Dr. Mize enjoys playing and experiencing live music. Chances are, you will find him at one of the local venues if there is a good artist in town. He also stays active through exercise and regularly competes in mountain obstacle races as well as the occasional half-marathon. As a certified open water diver, Dr. Mize has engaged in scuba dives across the globe and is always looking for the next adventure in the life aquatic.
