Guided Bone & Tissue Regeneration

Gum disease has traditionally been treated by eliminating the gum pockets by trimming away the infected gum tissue and by re-contouring the uneven bone tissue. Although this is still an effective way of treating gum disease, new and more sophisticated procedures are used routinely today. One of these advancements is guided bone regeneration, also referred to as guided tissue regeneration. This procedure is used to stabilize endangered teeth or to prepare the jaw for dental implants.

As periodontal disease progresses, pockets of degenerated bone develop in the jaw. These pockets can promote the growth of bacteria and the spread of infection. To address these pockets, Dr. Mize may recommend tissue regeneration. During this surgical procedure, the pockets are cleaned thoroughly, and a membrane is installed between the soft tissue and the pocket in the bone. Some of these membranes are bio-absorbable and some require removal. The membrane covers the pocket so that fast-growing soft tissue is blocked, and slower-growing bone can begin to grow or “regenerate” itself.

The procedure’s effectiveness generally depends on the patient’s willingness to follow a strict postoperative diet and careful oral care. Dr. Mize will help you determine if bone regeneration surgery is right for you.

My first visit was very emotional for me because I wasn't sure how difficult my problem would prove to be. Kim and Carol welcomed me with smiles and were very friendly with all of my questions. Meeting with Dr. Mize was definitely a delightful experience. He was warm, caring, and was not hurried in answering my questions. When I returned for scan, I had additional questions which he answered unhurriedly explaining the procedure with genuine concern for my well being. On the day of my procedure, the entire staff and Dr. Mize with Julie (chair-side) were very comforting and made the procedure seem painless. On the evening following the procedure, Dr. Mize called me from ou-of town-to check on how I was doing. I actually had no pain and am healing well with plans for future visits. Thank you, Dr. Mize and your staff for your gentle care.

Dr. Mize and his staff are outstanding. From the moment my husband and I walked in the office on the day of surgery and until we left we were treated with care and concern. All the office staff and nurses were very accommodating and went the extra mile to make sure I was comfortable and all my questions were answered. Dr. Mize was awesome. He put me at ease right away. He also took the time to call me at home and spent additional time answering some of my questions and guiding me with post-treatment questions that I had. Love this office and would highly recommend them for their care, concern and professionalism. Top notch!!!

This was my first (and hopefully, my only) implant and bone graft procedure. I found it to be a much easier experience than I would have ever anticipated. The doctor and staff were well-organized and they eased me comfortably, and pretty much painlessly, through the process step by step. Their follow-up phone calls and chairside attitudes were professional, yet personable. From the moment I was greeted at the door each time until I walked out the door, I felt comfortable and confident in their abilities and their demeanor.
